This month we want to celebrate the research of Jonathan Boyd who is one of our Top 5 Downloaded researchers in RADAR. Jonathan is part of The School of Design, Silversmithing and Jewellery (S&J) Dept. Alongside the outputs Jonathan has in RADAR, in 2014 Jonathan designed the Commonwealth Games medals, as well as the accompanying medal lapel pin, VIP commemorative medal and medal packaging. Jonathan also acted as an advisor on the design of the trays and podiums for the medal ceremonies. Jonathan together with a team of S&J staff (Helen Marriott, Anna Gordon, Andrew Lamb, Nigel Munro, Satoko Yamamoto and Michael Pell) hand-fabricated the 1514 medals over a period over 8 months. Each medal taking up to 3 days to hand craft. Huge amounts of knowledge were gained from the 6 months of research that went into understanding how to fabricate the intricate and unusual design. Jonathan’s practice based research has always focused on the relationship between object the body and language with new research currently looking at the how advertising and the volume of text we seem on a daily basis warps our understanding of reality.
