Adobe Illustrator Thursday 31st of January Library Computer Centre 5.30pm

Interested in using the laser cutters within the school but don't know where to start?

This is a repeat of last week's class due to high demand.

Come along to the big iMac training room in the library computer centre on Thursday the 24th of January. Kerry Aylin will be going through the steps you need to take to set up files for the laser cutters using Adobe Illustrator. Of course this class is not just all about using the laser cutter but also a great introduction to what is definitely one of the most useful pieces of software available within the library.

So come along at 5.30pm, if you have your own laptop with Adobe Illustrator installed on it, then you can bring that along.

Material ConneXion Database Trial for GSA

GSA Library is pleased to announce that staff and students have trial access, from the GSA campus only, to the online Material ConneXion (MC) library until 1st February. MC is an inspirational database of materials which has been developed for use across all design disciplines.

MC’s online library showcases over 7,000 advanced, sustainable and innovative materials in eight categories: polymers, naturals, metals, glass, ceramics, carbon-based, cement-based, and processes. It features cutting-edge materials and applications, including the world’s only collection of cradle-to-cradle sustainable materials.

MC’s Advanced Search option allows users to identify materials by a wide range of options including: category, processing, sustainability, usage, physical properties, manufacturer, and country of origin. The search results provide images of the materials along with detailed descriptions, usage characteristics, and manufacturer and distributor contact information, all compiled by MC’s specialist staff.

To access MC for the rest of this month from the GSA campus network, simply go to the link and begin exploring; no username or password required. We'd be interested in gathering any feedback you may have about the resource. Contact architecture librarian David Buri if you'd like to leave a comment: d.buri@gsa.ac.uk

Alasdair Gray Lanark Sculpture

As part of the Scottish Trusts Book Week several book sculptures were hidden around several locations, one hidden in the Glasgow School of Art Library sculpture is  currently being exhibited in the main Library until 28th Mar 13. The sculpture was inspired by (and made out of) Alasdair Gray's famous novel Lanark

The beautiful paper sculptures were made by a mystery sculptor whose identity remains a secret, the same sculptor left a series of beautiful and anonymous sculptures around Edinburgh in 2011 - all of which celebrated the importance of libraries, words and ideas. All that is known about the sculptor is that she is female and that she believes passionately in the importance of libraries, books, words and ideas
