Archives News: June 2008

The Glasgow School of Art Archives have started to make digital images of our collections available online via the Flickr website. A selection of images from our photographic archives has been uploaded. These include images of GSA staff and students from the 1890s – 1990s and examples of 19th century photographs taken by Duncan Brown, a former employee of the School and a talented amateur photographer. Some images of our textile collections have also been added, such as the red woven Portuguese apron shown here.

We plan to keep adding images to the site, including more photographs and textiles, along with examples of our architectural archives and Charles Rennie Mackintosh holdings. High resolution versions of the images can be requested by contacting the Archivist at archives@gsa.ac.uk.

Archives News is a monthly update on what's been happening with The Glasgow School of Art's archive collections.

Illuminations TV

The company that produce the Illuminations series of DVDs (which include theEye series) have recently set up a dedicated TV channel on the internet site Youtube. At present they have 21 videos posted including short films and extracts from their arts documentaries. This is a great way of getting a quick look at the kind of material Illuminations provide and serves as a handy 'taster' for the rest of the DVD series (of which we have many). You can access the Illuminations TV channel here.

Review of Journal Subscriptions

We have recently undertaken a comprehensive review of our current journal subscriptions, to ensure that our journals remain relevant and useful to the developing learning, research, teaching and leisure needs of our users.
A number of new titles have been recommended for subscription by our Subject Librarians, with some current titles recommended for discontinuation.
These recommendations are now available for consultation, and we want to hear your opinions or feedback.
Our consultation document will be available to view on the Library Website until 31 October 2008.

New Animation DVDs

Over the last couple of weeks we have added some excellent animation DVDs to the collection. Produced by the British Animation Awards these ten DVDs showcase a vast array of award-winning and groundbeaking animations.

The first six DVDs (DVD 990-995) focus on the British Animation Awards themselves with a selection of the best animations from the last 10 years of the bi-annual competition. The next two DVDs (DVD 996 & 997) focus exclusively on British animation and present some of the finest animations produced in this country over the last 35 years. On these discs you'll find gems like the haunting 1983 sci-fi short 'Skywhales' and the gothic, Gorey-influenced 'Sandman'. The final two discs present international animation classics (DVD 998) and the best of French computer animation (DVD 999) repsectively.

These DVDs should be of great use to any aspiring animator or filmmaker and of great interest to everyone else.
