The Shawshank Redemption (DVD 954) was released in 1995 to glowing reviews but a less than impressive showing at the box office. Warner Brothers struggled to get across the moral and philosophical scope of the picture in a two minute trailer and the masses stayed away, apparently convinced it was just your average prison-drama. However in the years that followed the film defied expectations and generated a huge word-of-mouth buzz that ensured it enjoyed great success on the home video market. Its popularity remains such that it is regularly ranked among the greatest films of all time and is currently the jointly best rated film by users of the Internet Movie Database. The film tells the story of a friendship that develops between two convicted murderers in the massive Shawshank Sate Prison who, in the face of the myriad difficulties of prison life, strive to retain their sense of dignity and integrity. Through acts of common decency they inspire those around them- ultimately showing prisoners and guards alike the importance of friendship and the power of hope.
